International Day Of The World’s Indigenous Peoples 2023
On 23 December 1994, the United Nations General Assembly decided, in its resolution 49/214, that the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People shall be observed on 9 August every year. The date marks the first meeting, in 1982, of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations.
The International Day observance will take place online on Wednesday, 9 August 2023.
This year’s theme is: Indigenous Youth as Agents of Change for Self-determination.

Cambodia has already organized 18 times, and this year, 2023, marks the nineteenth anniversary. This year, the 19th celebration will be held in Kampong Speu’s Sport Complex on August 9, 2023, led by the Ministry of Rural Development.
The Ministry of Rural Development, staffed by the Department of Minority Development, organized the 10th World’s Celebration and Cambodia’s First Celebration in 2005 in Phnom Penh, 2nd in Phnom Penh, 3rd in Ratanakiri, 4th in Pursat, 5th in Mondulkiri, 6th in Siem Reap, 7th in Stung Treng, 8th in Kampong Cham, 9th in Sihanouk, 10th in Kratie, 11th in Koh Kong, 12th in Kampong Speu, 13th in Kampong Thom, 14th in Preah Vihear, 15th in Ratanakiri, 16th and 17th in other target provinces, and 18th in Kratie.
Statements in response to each United Nations-adopted topic have always been issued by indigenous communities and organizations. As part of the promotion of indigenous human rights in Cambodia, key actors who have always supported indigenous peoples issue their own statements and offer financial and technical assistance to indigenous communities and organizations.
